Player Rules: 

  1. Travel:  During the academic year, GBOA teams will not be permitted (except for live period) to participate in more than two (2) tournaments or team events per month that require teams to utilize overnight accommodations
  2. Age/Player Eligibility Rule:  To be eligible to play in a GBOA certified event, a player must be 19 years of age or younger as of September 1st of the current year of competition and be a "recruitable" athlete. A "recruitable" athlete is defined as a prospect that has not signed a valid national letter of intent at the time of the competition or has been officially released in writing from such letter at the time of competition. A player is allowed to play a maximum of five years from the date of entering high school to be eligible to play in a GBOA certified event.
  3. Prep Rule:  5th year players will be allowed to participate in GBOA events as long as they are enrolled at a prep school and they do not turn 19 before September 1st.
  4. Sportsmanship:  Any player who instigates a fight in which a punch is thrown, or any player throwing a punch in a GBOA game will be ejected from that game. Additionally, the penalized player will be disqualified from any remaining GBOA tournament games during that calendar year.
  5. Academic Eligibility:  All GBOA players must have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.0 to play in a GBOA sanctioned game. Any team found to be utilizing a player with an academically ineligible player will forfeit all GBOA games.
  6. Community Service:  All GBOA players attending the GBOA Challenge of Champions must participate in the "GBOA Hoops Service Day" on the Friday immediately preceding the GBOA Challenge of Champions. Additionally, all players in GBOA events must make themselves available for pre-assigned fan autograph sessions to be held during all GBOA tournaments.
  7. Fundamental Skill Development:  All GBOA players must take part in at least one (1) GBOA sponsored skill development clinics, to be held at pre-selected GBOA events.
  8. License to Use Likeness:  Each player grants GBOA Hoops LLC permission to use, exploit, adapt, modify, reproduce, distribute, in any form now known or later developed, the player's image or individual likeness, name and/or voice, throughout the world, by incorporating it into publications, catalogs, brochures, books, magazines, photo exhibits, motion picture films, videotapes, and/or other media or commercial, information, educational, advertising or promotional items. Each player must sign this license prior to competing in GBOA events.

Coach & Team Rules:

  1. GBOA Membership Required - All teams must be a member of GBOA in order to participate in all GBOA events.
  2. Team Rules - No team can have more than 3 bordering state players during the grassroots basketball year. A player cannot leave a team, once the grassroots basketball season has started, unless the coach has left the program or that player has receive a written release from that program. If a player leaves without a written release from a GBOA team during the season, that player must sit out four (4) weekends, beginning from the time they last played on the team they left. Additionally, no player may play for more than one (1) GBOA team during a calendar year.
  3. Certification - All coaches on the sideline must be NCAA certified. Additionally, all GBOA coaches are subject to periodic background checks.
  4. Dress Code - Coaches must wear a collared GBOA shirt (to be provided) and dress pants (no shorts or jeans) on the sideline during the course of all GBOA games. GBOA coaches will not be permitted to wear baseball hats, doo rags (wave caps) or beanies while coaching during GBOA  events.

Tournament Rules:

  1. Game Rules:  All GBOA games will be played using traditional National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) rules.
  2. No Shoe Discrimination:  GBOA teams will be selected based on criteria outlined by the GBOA Operating Committee. However, no grassroots basketball team shall be excluded from GBOA based on shoe affiliation.
  3. Challenge of Champions:  The top two (2) from each GBOA Hoops regional tournament (champion and runner-up) will receive invitations to the GBOA Hoops Challenge of Champions tournament (total of eight (8) teams). Additionally, the GBOA Hoops Operating Committee will select an additional four (4) teams to attend the GBOA Hoops Challenge of Champions. The final four (4) teams chosen to attend the GBOA Hoops Challenge of Champions will be based on fan voting held on GBOAHoops.com. A total of sixteen (16) GBOA teams will compete in the GBOA Hoops Challenge of Champions.
  4. Charity Component: Each GBOA tournament will have a local charity sponsor who will benefit from a portion of the GBOA tournament proceeds and publicity.
